e-Leader (4)

This article will be about a leadership in action, which gives us a nice ending of the e-leader series. As there are many ways to develop a leader, depending on preference or the suitable of time, therefore, I invent my own version of leadership in action to answer such frequently encountered question from executives or personnel persons as…..

….”our company has been through many courses on leadership development, using many ways and formats; developing a team leader, a walk rally activity, a change agent, etc. but our problem are1. Out executives have become bore of the previous training formats. They need a new practical approach of leadership development.2. Such approach must be practical: we have to have a leader in all levels of the company”.

These are the problem that I have been cracking on. There are some regardful questions the real tangible result of behavioral-based leadership development approach such as searching for the best leadership style building good leadership habits, developing a functional leadership, etc, Another is how to measure the performance of a leader. How can we tell the success of a true leader?

The root of these questions lie are in the fact that many companies have training course on leadership because they just want to stay fashionable. Most have overlooked the basic requirements of having a constructive leadership development environment and the right organization culture and structure as has been explained in e-leader (1) and (2).

The truth is whether the company has the behavioral-based leadership development model or not is subordinate to the company having the right leadership competency model, which if already been in place, the “leadership in action” can be applied immediately.

From my point of view, the major steps towards the leadership in action should consist of:
(1) Setting up the leadership competency model
(2) Creating the mechanic of creating a leader
(3) Employing a leadership performance measurement index

And now it’s time to make a leader!

Here are the steps of making the “leadership in action” happens:
First, we need to have a framework of the leadership competency model. Primarily, such framework may be taken from the theory or an idea of creating a leader that I have already explained such as the West Point Way of guideline for developing the company’s executives to become the e-leader.

In addition, a conclusion should be reached on the set of qualifications of successful business leader or of CEO of some world class organizations who are dominant players of e-Business time. That conclusion is a foundation or principle to make a leader happens.

A conclusion is reached regarding the qualifications of successful leader.

Thereafter, step 1 and 2 are combined to provide a complete set of qualifications the successful leader possess. In other words, the company had completed to leadership competency model that fits for its organization.
In the next step, a leadership portfolio is prepared. This step is important as it enables a leadership trainee who takes part in the ‘leadership in action’ program to utilize and implement their knowledge, experience, and new idea about e-Business. This is the action part of process.
The last step is a Leadership Portfolio Assessment. A committee will evaluate a leadership portfolio of each person to determine their competency and readiness to become the e-leader of the dotcom business or e-business.
