e-Leader (2)

No doubt that Dotcom organization requires a leader with an e-leader characteristics. In last week article, I presented the West Point Way of leadership development, and left you with the topic of Leadership Engine or the mechanic of creating leadership. However, before we move on to that, I’d like to point out that the e-leader not only have to think, they have to think fast and well beforehand.

If we talk about free internet, this is no new stuff for the Netizen from America, Europe, or Singapore. In Thailand, we are close to that, and I like to call it a ‘near-free-state’. For example, you get free internet when purchasing a new computer, which could be hourly, monthly, or lifetime offers. Normally the ISP must be granted permission from the CAT to operate the service. But on August 4, however, there was a big news in our local net industry that the TOT would grant a permission to one ISP to operate free internet. The CAT quickly announced that is not possible. But the TOT said that is possible as it pointed out that TOT is currently operating a basic Land Line/Fixed Line telephone in the country and neighboring countries such as Laos, Malaysia. To allow free internet, TOT can just connect its line to the circuit in Malaysia and net user can use internet for free. This kind of breakaway thinking is a major qualification of the e-leader, he/she who thinks fast and unbounded. The idea of free internet, if actually done, would greatly benefit the business and the public at large. From the example, we can spot one competency of the e-leader : the boundless thinking.

Back to the e-leader, you might doubt of the applicability of building the leadership the West Point Way. Is it still applicable to today’s business? The fact is even with the changing way of operating business, it is the leader who actually induces that change to happen. Therefore, managing changes is a key in the mechanic of creating a leader.

The “leadership engine” is the basis of creating a leader. Normally, a winnig organization believes that leadership is in everyone. Leadership is everywhere in the organization and therefore, thoughts, values, proudness, and superiority must be assimilated to from a good ground of empowering and encouraging everyone to become a leader.
- A winning leader has to manage the change.
- A winning organization must be a teachable organization, rather than just a learning organization. In the future, it must be a Knowledge organization.

Especially in the e-Business, an e-leader needs a full grasp of electronics business model, a gateway to all business on the internet, the access to market, the way to generate sales, the offering of product support, and the back-up of online service. It is the gateway that links the whole IT world. The content provider is everything about providing content and/or community service to cater for some specific groups. Online exchange is an arrangement of online market structure for exchange of good s and service between seller and buyer. Convenient provider is to provide IT and online business supports. An e-leader has to think that business on the internet is the same story as in physical business; it is another distribution channel. At the same time, to generate revenue from the internet, one cannot win alone. An e-leader must have alliances. The e-leader also has another important function : to instill a new culture, to manage changes.

The next question is what value an e-leader is to deliver to the customer? The answer is the knowledge management. The e-leader must create a value-added product or service from his knowledge organization to his customers. Lastly, the e-leader has to see that anything not possible in the offline world could be possible in the online world. Strong tendency exists to an organization to come together to become a Godzilla Company. This is the leadership engine, the mechanic of creating an e-leader or the way for the e-leader to bring these elements into the new generation of leader.
